Substream Magazine Features New Franny London Single ‘Funny Girl’

FUNNY GIRL’, as featured in Substream Magazine, is the captivating new offering from California-based experimental art-pop singer, songwriter, and producer FRANNY LONDON as she continues to lay the trail for her highly anticipated sophomore EP California Poppy. Written and produced by Franny London herself, ‘Funny Girl’ comes on the back of her latest single ‘Metal’, which has been championed by Live Nation’s Ones To Watch, Substream Magazine, and Hype Machine, among others, adding to the recent support the fast-rising musician has received from the likes of The FADER, NYLON, and Flaunt Magazine.

Inspired by the likes of Sharon Van Etten, The Strokes, and Stevie Nicks, and how these great artists use melody to create such strength, Franny London taps into a different part of her voice to deliver ‘Funny Girl’ – a deeper and more expressive part that she hadn’t really been playing with or exploring until recording this song. Driven by glorious melodies, lush synth arrangements, and infectious drum patterns, ‘Funny Girl’ is a true power ballad that toes the line between vulnerability and strength. It is a free, intense, and self-assured record that is meant to evoke power and acceptance, and further a strong sense of self – not just for Franny London, but for the listener as well.

Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Funny Girl’, Franny London says, “I wanted to make a song about my younger self, about a mischievous, headstrong kid. I was considering the ways I have grown and changed, and the things I lost from that phase of my life, and how I could get the best of me back. I wanted to write to her, like she was standing in front of me. I wanted to ask her what she needed, and thank her, and work on integrating her into my life now. I wanted to honor how we come onto earth whole in our own ways, and how life can try to shake us down and teach us that the best parts of ourselves are things we should reject and change. I wanted to tell anyone who’s listening that the most power can be found in accepting those parts of ourselves.”

Already with over 1.5 million plays online, Franny London is an exciting talent with her own unique experimental art-pop sound that is both sprawling and precise. Having been playing music since she was 7-years old, Franny London is doing what she has always wanted to do, and now at 23-years-old, the multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, producer, and performer comes with an alternative sound that is at the forefront of pop music’s new expression. Highly recommended if you like the sounds of St. Vincent, Florence + The Machine, or Caroline Polachek, Franny London invites you into her glittering labyrinthine musical universe, centred around attentive songwriting and textured soundscapes.
