Rolling Stone Features New PsychoYP Single ‘Midlife Crisis’

Barely six months after the release of his critically acclaimed fourth studio project Euphoria, which debuted at #1 on the Apple Music Top Albums chart for Hip-Hop/Rap in Nigeria, and has garnered over three million plays online, with rave reviews from fans and critics alike, international rap artist and chart-topping Nigerian rising star PSYCHOYP< is back with an exciting double a-side single release by way of ‘MIDLIFE CRISIS’ and ‘WYDTM’, as featured on Rolling Stone, which are both produced by long-time collaborator and burgeoning British producer Dylan Scott aka SCXTT (AJ Tracey, Tee Grizzley, Timbaland).

Driven by a jumpy bassline, lush piano arrangements and ethereal trap-infused harmonies, and held together excellently by his infectious melodic rap flow and gripping storytelling lyrics, ‘Midlife Crisis’ sees PsychoYP waxing lyrical about falling for an older woman, who might just be with him because she’s going through a midlife crisis. ‘WYDTM’ on the other hand, is a more uptempo UK Garage-influenced offering that sees PsychoYP linking up with fellow Apex Village artist Azanti to deliver a catchy offering about trying to spend your way out of heartbreak.

Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Midlife Crisis’, PsychoYP says, “The song comes from a special place because I’m used to showing my strengths and hardcore side. This time, I really wanted to tell people the kind of relationships we face right now. They are filled with broken people finding something special in each other. ‘Midlife Crisis’ tells the story of a young boy in love with an older woman. Their bond is formed from the need to escape and craving for intimacy”.

As for how ‘WYDTM’ came together, PsychoYP adds that, “I spent a lot of time studying UK music and the various styles in the black music scene. This song is pure vibes inspired by the Craig David era that I grew up listening to with my older siblings when I was much younger and we lived in the UK with my mum. It’s an upbeat dance track about turning to material things to deal with heartbreak, and I just had to tap Apex Village prodigy Azanti for the garage-themed tune”.

Aptly described as the ‘Fresh Prince of Nigerian rap’, 23-year old culture icon PsychoYP is one of the pioneers and leaders of the new wave of rap and hip-hop music in Nigeria. Born in the country’s capital city Abuja, PsychoYP is a multi-faceted artist with a diverse and progressive sound that cuts across rap, trap, grime, drill and R&B music. Recently crowned the best rapper in Africa by The NATIVE, and hailed as one of the 10 Nigerian artists to watch by Complex, PsychoYP already boasts one of the best rap discographies on the continent, and he is only just getting started.
