Following the release of three EPs in the last two years that have seen her garner rave reviews and critical acclaim from the likes of BBC 1Xtra, Red Bull Music, Soulection, Resident Advisor and Afropunk, among others, South African-based Namibian electronic music producer, DJ and creative GINA JEANZ is gearing up to release her long-awaited debut album Lucid Theory in December. She started teasing the project with her latest single ‘Sun Spot’, which was supported by Spotify on their ‘Global Club Music’ playlist and Apple Music on their ‘New In Dance’ playlists, and she returns on October 29 with her brand new single titled ‘DOPAMINE’, as featured on Notion.
Produced by Gina Jeanz and featuring Zambian alternative soul vocalist MOONGA K., ‘Dopamine’ is groove-filled dance floor filler driven by lush deep house and future bass sensibilities, while MOONGA K. explodes on the track with his captivating vocals, infectious delivery and commanding presence, to make the single an exciting listen from start to finish. As the lyrics suggest, ‘Dopamine’ is about getting your energy levels back up and being able to celebrate life once again, and with the world beginning to come out of the global pandemic of the past two years, the song resonates very much as a beautiful and positive message.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Dopamine’, Gina Jeanz says, “This track particularly touches on mental health. I wanted to approach the production in a more uplifting/upbeat tone mostly because I felt that having this platform to produce music and express myself while dealing with my own personal journey really carried me through. MOONGA K. who features on the track also expresses his own thoughts and feelings and after sharing our personal stories in the studio, we decided to work on ‘Dopamine’ and make it a celebratory track. In short, it’s about accepting the struggle, knowing that it doesn’t define you, celebrating life and working towards overcoming one’s personal battles”.
Counting the likes of GQ, Glamour, BBC 1Xtra, Foundation FM, Hype Magazine and Worldwide FM as fans and supporters of her music, Gina Jeanz is not only flying the flag for electronic music in Africa, but she is also one of the few women producers across the African music scene – the fact of which drives her passion to uplift and empower more women in the industry. Revered for her skills on the decks as well as her production and music-making dexterities, Gina has also captivated audiences the world over with her DJ sets, from Afropunk Festival to Rocking The Daisies to Red Bull Music Festival, just to mention a few.
Born and raised in Namibia, and now based in Cape Town in South Africa, Gina Jeanz has established that she is more than capable of rising to the occasion. While she and the rest of the world retreated into lockdown during the pandemic, Jeanz also took that time to apply herself more creatively as well. She collaborated with Red Bull on their ‘Made In 72 Hours’ project last summer, before ending 2020 with two EPs of her own, ‘Rhythm Chronicles’ and ‘Motion’. In that time, the producer, DJ and composer has also been working on her debut album Lucid Theory, which is due for release in December 2021, preceded by ‘Sun Spot’ and now ‘Dopamine’.
