FIZZY Magazine Interviews Lyves About Her New Single ‘Change’

Following her long-awaited comeback in March, after a two-year hiatus, with the exquisite alt-R&B offering ‘How Would It Feel’, which has received rave reviews and acclaim from the likes of BBC 1Xtra, COLORS, Notion and the Joe Budden Podcast, and with her classic track ‘No Love’, being sampled on the new Vince Staples album Ramona Park Broke My Heart, London-based artist, songwriter, and producer LYVES is excited to share her brand new single titled ‘CHANGE’, she caught up with FIZZY Magazine for an interview to discuss about the single, which she produced alongside Mercury Prize nominated songwriter, musician, and producer Dave Okumu (Adele, Jessie Ware, Amy Winehouse, St. Vincent).

Serving as the title track and lead single off her forthcoming sophomore EP of the same name arriving this summer, ‘Change’ not only sees Lyves letting listeners fully submerge into the new musical universe that she has been creating over the past two years, but the alternative R&B offering, driven by ethereal piano and ominous drum arrangements, also reveals the Italo Australian native at her most vulnerable and most personal, as she reveals her battles with accepting the change that came at the end of an important relationship.

‘Change’ also comes with a beautiful, conceptualized music video that brings the track further to life, and sees Lyves appearing in one of her music videos for the very first time – a gesture that felt very significant to the London-based musician, with ‘Change’ being her most deeply personal track to date. For the visuals, Lyves collaborated with burgeoning director Reece Salvadorai, who has also worked with Dizzee Rascal, Big Zuu and Claudia Valentina, among others, with choreography created by London-based dancer and multi-disciplinary artist Tylor Deyn.

Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Change’ Lyves says, “It is a very personal narrative of my experience reaching rock bottom following the ending of an important relationship. The devastation I felt was like no other I had experienced before, but in completely losing myself, I also found that staying stuck in denial only perpetuated the suffering further. It’s a song about reaching acceptance after months of living in false hope of reconciliation. It tells the story of how learning to accept and embrace change after so much resistance became my saving grace”.

As for working with Dave Okumu on ‘Change’, Lyves adds that, “Collaborating with Dave on the production was a magical experience. He really understood and witnessed what I was singing about and how I wanted to convey this emotional story. This song feels incredibly vulnerable yet also powerful and menacing all at once, so I wanted to really imbue these emotions and the journey across them. Dave’s presence and beautiful musical contributions felt like a gift and infused a sense of protection over the music. I felt very seen by him”.

With over 50 million streams online and critical acclaim from global tastemakers including Rolling Stone, NME, Complex, Notion and Clash Magazine, Lyves is revered for her emotive lyrical themes, empowering voice, and making music that digs deep. Having taken the past two years away from the limelight to hone her craft as a producer and songwriter even further, Lyves is excited to bring listeners into this new era of her music, which feels even more revealing, raw and free than previous works, underpinned by a fusion of genre influences, from jazz, Motown and soul to experimental electronica, folk and R&B, which has always been at the heart of what she does.

‘Change’ is out on May 6 via AWAL and is the lead single and title track for Lyves’ upcoming sophomore EP set for release this summer.
