Coming on the back of its recent audio release, which has been met with rave reviews and acclaim for its hypnotic dancehall-inflected vibe and post-groove sound design, with support from Complex, Spotify, Apple Music, BBC 1Xtra, Soulection and Hype Machine, among others, exciting genre-bending rapper and vocalist SANTI is proud to unveil the brand new music video for ‘Freaky’ featuring Toronto-based R&B rising star Nonso Amadi and Nigerian emcee Bridge, as premiered by The FADER.

Shot in Dubai and Nigeria, and directed by Santi, who is also a burgeoning filmmaker, and co-directed by Jullz Bek, who has previously worked with the likes of Vogue Arabia, Louis Vuitton, and Schön Magazine, the video for ‘Freaky’ is a dark found footage visual that pays homage to its old Nollywood ancestors, while giving a nod to the unpredictability of Korean movies, as it tells the story of a girl who wants nothing but to destroy the souls of men.

Speaking about the inspiration for the ‘Freaky’ video, Santi says, “Growing up, I idolized old Nigerian horror movies, especially the ones directed by Helen Ukpabio. Just like the cult horror 80’s era of Hollywood, Nigeria had an era in the 90’s of stifling horror movies. It was through these films that our parents picked up the habits of warning us not to eat food from strangers and pick up money from the floor”.

Delving deeper into the visuals, Santi adds that, “in films such as ‘Highway To The Grave’, Helen Ukpabio used marine spirits and witchcraft to depict women as powerful entities, and with ‘Freaky’, our vision was to pay homage to her and vintage Nollywood Horror films, by telling the story of an evil girl and a priest/exorcist. In Nigerian movies, the priest always shows up to symbolize the triumph of good over evil, but in ‘Freaky’ however, the priest is ‘good’ but has a creepy feel to him”.
