Following on from the release of her debut EP Systems Fail, which was released last year to rave reviews from fans and critics alike, 18-year old indie / bedroom pop darling LILAC SPIRIT is back with her brand new single and first offering of 2020 titled ‘NOTHING IS REAL’. Unveiled alongside a fitting music video, as premiered via Affinity Magazine, shot in Kyiv, Ukraine, and directed by burgeoning filmmaker, photographer and creative designer Ubik Litvin (Vogue, Marie Claire, VIVA), ‘Nothing Is Real’ will serve as the precursor for her upcoming debut album, which is scheduled for release this autumn.
Speaking about how ‘Nothing Is Real’ came about, Lilac Spirit says, “the chorus came to my mind about three years ago, but with absolutely different lyrics, but when I found this song unfinished a year later, I was dealing with some inner conflicts. It didn’t take me long to think of the new lyrics, because they were just my mind’s reflections that were perfectly matching the melody. This song is a reality check for me, because neither my past nor my future is real. We are just stuck there with our present, which is, in fact, momentary. Yesterday is a memory, and tomorrow is unknown, today is fleeting. So is anything even real? Yes or no, why should it matter anyway?”
Exploring the inspiration behind the song a bit more, Lilac Spirit adds that, “Sometimes when you get too carried away in your thoughts and think too deeply about life, you can lose touch with reality. Since we perceive the world through the lens of our own experiences, the reality that exists in your mind can get distorted too. That is when you start questioning your consciousness and whether things matter as much as you think they do. These thoughts appear as a conflict between reality and illusions and allow for a realization that things don’t hold the same high value that we assign to them, and therefore we should be able to let go of things easily”.
Born in Kyiv, Ukraine, and currently living in Berlin, Germany, where she is studying at Berlin International School, Lilac Spirit has been singing since the age of 9, despite being raised in a family that wasn’t very musically inclined. While many singers are born with a musical support system, Lilac Spirit had to teach herself all that we can hear in her music today, but all through that journey, songwriting has always been the one thing that comes naturally to her. Honing her talents in her formative years through singing competitions such as the 2014 Junior Eurovision national finals, she burst onto the indie scene with her debut single ‘My Soul’ at the age of 15.
With a stronger emphasis and penchant for lyrics than most, framed not only by her life experiences, but also by her belief that language is the most powerful force in changing the lives of billions of people every day, Lilac Spirit writes openly and honestly about the way her mind processes her world, as well as the influence of her everyday experiences as a young person living in Berlin, and the significant change in her life of having moved from Ukraine at a young age, which she says was the catalyst for her “to start everything from scratch” – a sentiment that can be traced to her new single ‘Nothing Is Real’.
